The mechanism

The chart pairs two bars at each revenue level. The red bar is the founder's W-2 salary; the dark bar is the total cash they actually take, including profit paid out. At every tier the dark bar towers over the red one, and the gap grows as the agency gets bigger. Founders who only look at the salary line conclude they earn below average, when the real number tells a very different story.
