The mechanism

The chart runs two lines from year one. For a while they rise together, so it feels like good work is driving growth. Then they separate: the reputation line keeps climbing while the revenue line flattens out. The shaded space between them is the growth your reputation earned but your positioning never turned into money - great work was the price of entry, not the engine.
