The mechanism

The chart is a square split into four boxes. Going up means more of the credibility you already have; going right means a bigger pool of possible buyers. The top-right box, marked with a target, is the only safe place - you're known for something and there's still room to grow. The other boxes are traps: a tiny market you'll use up in a year, or a big market where nobody knows you yet.
